Like the vast majority of my photographs – it just happened.

I rarely go into shoots with specific visual concepts in mind – my collaborator and I may have shared some ‘keystone’ images, things that served to inspire and ensure that we’re speaking the same visual language, but more often than not, nowadays, I watch as they explore an environment and I formulate on-the-fly.

In that particular photograph, Abena took me to a location that she was familiar with, and we both immediately noticed that tree, growing sideways out of the creek bank.
